Okay, I'll admit it, reading this made me very sad. A recent series of studies published in the journal Personal Relationships found (among other things) that men who give flowers are also more likely to be abusers. It's true that I generally regard flowers as an empty cop-out gift for people without any imagination, but at the same time it's really depressing to think that something as silly and innocent as flower-giving could be an indicator of domestic abuse.

My husband defies that. He once brought me a dozen roses and a huge bouquet of various wild flowers IN THE SAME NIGHT. He = the bestest.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I know plenty of great guys give flowers. It's just sad to read that even FLOWERS are correlated with domestic abuse. Sometimes the world is not a friendly place :(
There was nothing surprising to me in that abstract. Did you purchase the article and find something in it that indicated the correlation you described specifically between flowers and violence or are you commenting more broadly on seemingly romantic "mate retention" gestures? Speaking broadly, I would say it is completely logical that "mate retention" gestures would corelate somewhat to violence in a relationship. I would only be surprised if a specific gesture, such as flowers, coresponded more highly than others or if the overall correlation was exceedingly high. Unless I am reading this incorrectly, the abstract defines nothing more than a correlation between "mate retention" gestures and violence (of unidentified size). To me, it seems natural that a guy would have to work harder to retain a mate that he was battering. Did you get a chance to read the full text to find out the level of correlation and see which mate retention behaviors were most highly associated with wife-beaters?

Unrelated to this post, but one of my friends on LJ made a post I though you wouldn't mind reading. It relates to both your recent atheism and Dalai Lama posts, and a bit to your less recent Intelligent Design vs. evolution post:

Keep in mind, the author of this post is a very spiritual Wiccan, a schizophrenic, and a science geek :)
