Well, for all your scoffage at the intelligence of various believers, I know I can count on you to appreciate a Milton reference. Or a Billy Joel. Because you are the greatest blogger ever, deserving of great respect.
Hmm, careful there...I don't scoff at the intelligence of believers, necessarily. Many otherwise intelligent people are religious, and this has been true across history. I have no trouble admitting that or respecting their accomplishments, any more than I have trouble admitting and recognizing the accomplishments of brilliant people who also happened to be racist.
Indeed, in some ways I feel less disappointed in religious people who are actually stupid. A severely mentally retarded 30 year old who still believes in Santa is not someone I would criticize or deride, but a normal-functioning 30 year old who sincerely believes in Santa is a different story...and since God and Santa are equals in my mind, this principle applies to religion as well. People who really are stupid have an excuse for believing stupid things. What annoys me is when I see otherwise-intelligent people choosing lazy, cowardly, ignorant cop-out thinking.
Always there has been some terrible evil to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it by furnishing the exorbitant sums demanded. Yet, in retrospect, these disasters seem never to have happened, seem never to have been quite real.

I'll see you in Hell.
Better there than Heaven...at least there will be company worth keeping :).
